God said, “On the seventh day thou shalt rest.” The meaning behind it was simple: Take a break. Call a timeout. Find some balance. Recharge. Somewhere along the line, however, this mantra for living faded from modern consciousness.
Facebook, Twitter and E-Mails, Oh My!
God or no god, it's safe to say a Facebook-free day, disconnected from e-mails, web searches, business calls, "I'm-running-late" calls, and commute-time twitter updates are rare to come by. You likely know a similar routine. It feels familiar, and safe even, but if we were to add up the hours on time spent in front of a screen, we might, well, scream.
A group of Jewish artists felt just that, creating a campaign called, The Sabbath Manifesto: Slowing down lives since 2010. This March 4-5, 2011, a small, secular group of artists, writers, filmmakers and media professionals continue to continue to carry the Slow Food-like legacy. After all, taking a deserved time out from our fast-paced, tech-y lives transcends religion.
Power Down for Outdoor Play, Perhaps Booty?
If you, like me, feel ready to devote one day per week to, "unwind, unplug, relax, reflect, get outdoors, get with loved ones and, if we’re lucky, get some booty, too," the Sabbath Manifesto helps with ten principles to abide by, sunset to sunset. The key one that must be met is slipping your cell phone into a cute sleeping bag (they provide this!) and avoiding technology at all cost. The others rules are flexible and you're encouraged to shape what suits you. If that's volunteering, the campaign has teamed up with Volunteer Match. Or, maybe you simply wish to relax.
Take the Unplug Challenge
Though I haven't decided how I'll use my day, I have decided to take the Unplug Challenge and I'm confident it's going to be awesome. Stay tuned for next week. I'll be blogging on the manifesto's ten principles and offering up ideas to inspire your gadget- and computer screen-free day.
